A Quick Note:  I am really excited about this year and getting to know all of the students.  For those of you who do not know me, my name is Dave Chapman and I have been at Evans Elementary for the past 12 years.  I spent my first year here as a fourth grade teacher and the next six as a third grade teacher.  After that I became the media specialist and am now in my 6th year in that position.

My Role:  Besides my normal “library” duties, I am a support person for the staff and students in this school.  I support the learning that goes on in the classroom by providing materials and resources to the teachers, as they need them.  I also provide instruction to students on topics such as research, dictionary skills, and technology related items.

My IB Role:  The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) believes that the library should be the hub of the school and that it is the center of all learning.  I also believe this to be the case, so we have created a flexible use schedule so that the doors to the library are open most of the day.  This allows for students to check out books as well as conduct research.

As required by IBO, each grade level teaches 6 “Units of Inquiry” each year.  I have created resource lists for all 36 units.  At the beginning of each unit I pull as many books from the resource list as possible and check them out the grade level teams so that they have the resources for each unit in their classrooms.  Teachers also hold “Inquiry Sessions in the library where the students explore the resources we have on a certain topic and generate questions about that topic.

The library/media center, or inquiry center as it has starting to be called some, is a place where students can come to get answers to those burning questions that they have as well as find those books they want to read.

Be sure to visit the expectations page of this Web page so you are familiar with them with what I expect from the students.

Please stop by and say hello when you are in the building. If you have any questions please feel free to give me a call or use the e-mail link on this page.
